Elementary Education major LaShuna Anderson awarded scholarship

Dallas, TX (February 13, 2016) – Texas A&M University-Commerce student LaShuna Anderson has been named a Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar and awarded a $1000 scholarship in recognition of her inspiring personal narrative, excellent academic record and community service.

The Nancy Larson Foundation proudly supports students across the country majoring in elementary education by awarding scholarships to deserving students each year. Anderson is one of nine recipients selected from the many applications received by the Foundation.

In her personal narrative, Anderson explained, “I want to teach because I know from experience that a teacher can help change the future of students for the best. I want to make a difference in students’ lives, equip them with tools to affect the people in their lives for the better and help students who might need it to get back on track.”

“My sister had health and learning issues while I was growing up so when I played teacher with her, I was never sure how to keep her interested,” said Anderson. “Now that I am educated in children with exceptionalities, I understand that differentiated learning can better keep students like my sister engaged. I believe that the experience with my sister inspired me even further in my upcoming career.”

“We get so many excellent applicants, but LaShuna has such a passion for teaching and for children,” said Nancy Larson. “It is clear to us from her story that she is organized, confident, compassionate and adaptive. These are all traits that will really help her become the excellent teacher she wishes to be.”

Juniors, seniors and graduate students who have declared an elementary education major are invited to submit a personal narrative about about why they want to teach, what personal experiences they have had that inspired them to teach and what will make them excellent teachers. Applicants are also asked to include community service activities and experiences they have had working with children.

Larson, a former teacher and curriculum director, has dedicated her life to advancing elementary education. Her original Saxon Math K–4 program was developed because teachers needed a classroom-tested math program that would prepare children for advanced math classes. In recent years, Larson has used the same approach to develop Nancy Larson Science for kindergarten through fourth-grade students. The program was written to provide in-depth science content in an easy-to-teach format.
