Elementary Education major Danny Robinson awarded scholarship

Shelbyville, IN (February 12, 2016) – University of Indianapolis student Danny Robinson has been named a Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar and awarded a $1000 scholarship in recognition of his inspiring personal narrative, excellent academic record and spirit of community service.

The Nancy Larson Foundation proudly supports students across the country majoring in elementary education by awarding scholarships to deserving students each year. Robinson is one of nine recipients selected from the many applications received by the Foundation.

In his personal narrative, Robinson explained, “I had a deep-seated need to find a calling which would allow me to serve the greater good. It became clear to me that my calling was to serve my community as an educator and advocate for youth that are overlooked much of the time.”

“Children need a champion who won’t give up on them and who insist that they become the best that they can be,” said Robinson. “I lacked that champion and struggled. I want to be that champion for every one of my future students, help children reach their potential and also feel part of their community. For me the word ‘teacher’ means: commitment, compassion, responsibility and understanding. My goal is to uplift students so that they can achieve anything!”

“We get so many excellent applicants, but Danny really impressed us with his personal story about his journey to become an educator and what that means to him,” said Nancy Larson. “I believe he will be one of those teachers that positively influences many children to follow their dreams and fulfill their goals.”

Juniors, seniors and graduate students who have declared an elementary education major are invited to submit a personal narrative about about why they want to teach, what personal experiences they have had that inspired them to teach and what will make them excellent teachers. Applicants are also asked to include community service activities and experiences they have had working with children.

Larson, a former teacher and curriculum director, has dedicated her life to advancing elementary education. Her original Saxon Math K–4 program was developed because teachers needed a classroom-tested math program that would prepare children for advanced math classes. In recent years, Larson has used the same approach to develop Nancy Larson Science for kindergarten through fourth-grade students. The program was written to provide in-depth science content in an easy-to-teach format.
