GARDEN CITY — A local student was recently named a Nancy Larson Scholar and awarded a $1000 scholarship by the Nancy Larson Foundation.

Matilda Hall, a resident of Garden City, is a Junior at Wichita State University majoring in elementary education, who discovered a love for teaching while volunteering for an organization called Youth Encounter. For a year Hall traveled the East Coast of the United States leading interactive discussion programs, world hunger service projects, live music events, and programs for youth groups, school assemblies, detention centers, and communities. They also worked with preschools, retirement homes, and even helped provide disaster relief after Hurricane Sandy.

Hall enrolled in the elementary education program at Wichita State but continued her passion for volunteering as a mentor for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. While maintaining a 3.9 GPA, she has also worked in an after-school program and as a paraeducator in a local elementary school.

Hall is one of seven recipients selected from the many applications received by the Foundation.
