Roanoke College student Caitlin Blake named Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar

Salem, VA (February 15, 2021) – Roanoke College student Caitlin Blake has been named a Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar and awarded a $1000 scholarship in recognition of her inspiring leadership, personal narrative, and academic achievement.

The Nancy Larson Foundation proudly supports students across the country majoring in elementary education by awarding scholarships to deserving students each year. Blake is one of eight recipients selected from the many applications received by the Foundation.

In her personal narrative, Caitlin explained how she had wanted to be a teacher since her first semester at Roanoke College. “I began working with a child who had developmental disabilities and we bonded, which solidified my choice in teaching. Growing up as one of ten siblings, some with disabilities, I know how to work with kids in Special Education and I’m very comfortable with them. I knew my career would involve children. In my future classroom I know I’ll be able to put my skills of patience, communication and my unique perspective to the test.”

“Caitlin’s extensive background working with disabled and developmentally delayed children impressed us,” remarked Nancy Larson. “She has the patience, perseverance and the kindness to be a teacher for those who struggle more than others.”

Larson, a former teacher and curriculum director, has dedicated her life to advancing elementary education. Nancy Larson Science K–5 programs are classroom-tested and prepare children for upper-level science classes and careers in science. The program was written to provide in-depth science content in an easy-to-teach format.
