Western Governors University Student
Michelle Sparman Named Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar

Kent, WA – Western Governors University student Michelle Sparman has been named a Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar and awarded a $1000 scholarship in recognition of her inspiring leadership, personal narrative, and academic achievement.

The Nancy Larson Foundation proudly supports students across the country majoring in elementary education by awarding scholarships to deserving students each year. Sparman is one of seven recipients selected from the many applications received by the Foundation.

In her personal narrative, Michelle shared, “For the past 10 years I took a break from working outside of the home as a research scientist and embryologist to invest my time, energy, love, and passion for education into my two boys. I wanted to give them the best foundation that I could. During this time I learned that I really love teaching STEM-based subjects at the elementary school level. This is my passion. I love seeing that spark in the eyes of children and the smile on their faces when they discover something new. The ‘WOWS’ when they look into the eyepieces of a microscope for the first time, or the ‘I DID IT!’ when they construct a bridge using marshmallows and toothpicks just melt my heart. A few years back, I was asked to coordinate a MAD Science event for our church. The success of this experience truly gave me the confidence to continue pursuing my passion for teaching science to children.”

“Michelle chose teaching later in life after having a very successful career as a research scientist,” said Larson  “This background  in science and her deep desire to teach children have come together in a way that will create a great foundation for her to become an amazing teacher. I am inspired by her story and look forward to seeing her become successful in her own classroom.”

Larson, an author,  former teacher, and curriculum director, has dedicated her life to advancing elementary education. Nancy Larson® Science K–5 programs are classroom-tested and prepare children for upper-level science classes and careers in science. The program was written to provide in-depth science content in an easy-to-teach format.
